What Is VRF/VRV?
Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) — or VRV as trademarked by Daikin who invented the technology in 1982 — is a large-scale commercial HVAC system where a single outdoor compressor unit serves 2 to 64+ indoor units through a network of refrigerant piping. Each indoor unit operates independently with its own thermostat, allowing different temperatures in different zones simultaneously. The system continuously varies the amount of refrigerant flowing to each indoor unit based on demand, achieving COP ratings of 3.5-5.5 — significantly higher than conventional systems. In the Philippines, VRF/VRV dominates the mid-to-large commercial segment, used in hotels, office towers, malls, and hospitals across Metro Manila and Cebu.
VRF vs Chiller: When to Choose Each
For Philippine commercial buildings, the choice between VRF and chiller systems depends on building size, budget, and operational requirements. VRF excels in buildings of 2,000-15,000 sqm where zone control is important — each floor or tenant can independently manage their comfort and be individually metered for energy billing. Chillers are more cost-effective above 15,000 sqm where centralized cooling with chilled water distribution becomes more efficient. VRF systems have lower initial installation cost for medium buildings because they don't require cooling towers, pump rooms, or chilled water piping infrastructure. However, VRF refrigerant piping length is limited to approximately 165 meters (Daikin VRV IV) from outdoor to farthest indoor unit, making chillers the only option for very large facilities.
